Cannot delete folder with a lot of spaces in the filename of windows server

Recently and as a result of a careless user my ftp server was abused by some eastern europeans. The files they were uploading were password protected and the folders they were storing them in were having a massive amount of spaces in the file name for example (I use quotes to illustrate) " temp"
When you try and delete a tree structure that contains a number of these folders windows and ftp clients throw an error. After a bit of researching I found the following solution.
Go deep into the tree and delete all contents in that folder. Then move one level up, open a command prompt and type
rd \\?\
then drag and drop from the open file explorer window the folder. The folder path should be added within quotes.
Press enter and the folder should now be removed (if it is empty)
Now you can work your way up the tree to remove the rest.
