Windows 7 cannot see the internet from the work network

Following an upgrade from vista home premium to windows 7 I discovered that my laptop when connected to the work network, it would discover two networks. One work network and one public unidentified network (without internet). This meant that I could access the exchange server via outlook, and the network mapped drives but could not see the internet or use instant messaging.
After much playing around I discovered that I could “fix” this by disabling the network adapter and then enabling it again. Then I would only get the work network showing.
Not sure if this has something to do with the laptop not being on the work domain.
I know this is not an elegant fix but it works for me and I would love to hear if anyone knows of a better solution.
